Phishers targeting travel industry higlights risks of password-reliant security

August 2022 by Patrick McBride, CMO at Beyond Identity

As the holiday season kicks off, cyber criminals are exploiting the big getaway with scams designed to target eager travelers.

Sadly, it’s one of the key trends of the summer: hackers impersonate established brands as holidaymakers look for deals on travel, hotels and attractions.

A well-designed phishing attack could well see customers out of pocket from stolen credit card details and personal information.

The onus to prevent falling victim to such attacks has typically fallen on the shoulders of the customer but the reliance on password-based authentication needs a complete system overhaul according to one tech expert: Patrick McBride, CMO at Beyond Identity.

“Exploiting passwords remains the single largest way threat actors gain access to accounts and data. In fact, they’re the root cause of a massive 80% of all attacks.

The advice given to customers to build longer, stronger passwords is simply doomed to fail - and I’d call on all businesses - be they hotels, airlines or travel agencies - to commit to eliminating passwords and all easily phishable authentication factors entirely.

Scammers don’t take a holiday and with heightened threats designed to catch off-guard or unsuspecting consumers, we need to eliminate the risks that passwords pose. At a time when it’s never been more important to retain and keep business, your customers will thank you for taking steps to keep their most valuable information protected.”
