Oracle Announces Latest Release of Oracle Secure Backup
March 2008 by Marc Jacob
Oracle announced the general availability of Oracle Secure Backup 10.2, Oracle’s high-performance tape backup solution for Oracle Databases and NAS storage devices. Oracle Secure Backup is a complete enterprise solution for centralized tape backup management with advanced features such as encryption, vaulting, and dynamic drive sharing.
Customers can achieve superior data protection at low cost using Oracle Secure Backup’s security policies safeguarding data stored on tape and controlling access to backup systems and data. This latest release of Oracle Secure Backup provides policy-based encryption at the domain, host, backup or tape level using AES128, AES192 or AES256 encryption algorithms. Oracle Secure Backup provides automated management of all encryption keys associated with tape backups, simplifying the job of the database administrator. Encryption keys are centrally stored on the Oracle Secure Backup Administrative Server, which seamlessly manages decryption during restoration. Corporate data encryption requirements are met with user-defined key management policies including key type (random or user passphrase) and re-key schedule.
Oracle Secure Backup 10.2 automates tape management throughout its life cycle from creation, expiration to reuse. Existing tape storage pool concepts have been extended to include policy-based management for tape vaulting, duplication, and migration from Virtual Tape Library (VTL) to physical tape. Oracle Secure Backup automates tape management per user-defined policies, which may include duplicating tapes with the same or different retention and vaulting schedule as the original tapes, scheduling rotation (vaulting) of tapes between multiple locations.
Utilizing Oracle Secure Backup 10.2 and Oracle Database 11g, enhanced backup performance and reduced size is achieved by eliminating the backup of committed undo. In addition, the Oracle solution reduces CPU overhead during database backup utilizing shared buffers for data movement.
This latest release of Oracle Secure Backup also includes support for Automated Cartridge System Library Software (ACSLS) enabling usage with Sun StorageTek managed tape products and solutions deployed in the most demanding, enterprise IT environments.
Oracle Secure Backup 10.2 continues to offer low costs with an innovative, single-component licensing model helping save customers IT dollars and simplifying license management. Customers benefit from dependable tape backup management for their entire IT environment and can rely on a single technical resource for database and file system data protection. Oracle Secure Backup 10.2 delivers a viable alternative to expensive media management products for the enterprise with the additional advantage of one-of-a-kind integration with Oracle Database.
