Blackfog Comment on NCSC Lockbit Advisory
June 2023 by Blackfog
The NCSC and international partners very recently offered an advisory on the ongoing Lockbit ransomware threat.
Dr Darren Williams, CEO and Founder of ransomware specialists, BlackFog, comments:
"When it comes to publicly reported ransomware attacks, our data shows that LockBit leads with 17.6% of all attacks, followed by BlackCat at 16.9%. In the case of those unreported incidents this year LockBit far exceeds any other variant, with 494 attacks vs its closest competitor, BlackCat at 171 attacks. All ransomware poses an enormous threat to organisations across the globe, especially given the move from encryption to exfiltration and extortion. Our data also shows that 89% of all attacks are now involving exfiltration so we know that data is the motivation for cyberattacks.
Data can be leveraged in multiple ways to make victims pay, so it’s no surprise that this is the most active area of development for cybercriminals. Existing tools that focus on defensive techniques aren’t up to job in preventing modern attacks, so organisations must adopt newer third-generation anti data exfiltration technology to put an end to attacks and stop data loss.”
